SWA2621 Problem Gambling: Treatment & Recovery
This course introduces students to the nature, progression, and treatment of gambling disorder, with emphasis on its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Topics covered include screening, assessment, counseling strategies, relapse and suicide prevention, co-occurring conditions, client rights, case management, and interdisciplinary care. It will examine the financial, relational, mental, and emotional health consequences of gambling disorder, ethical considerations, and work with diverse populations. Prevention and recovery supports are also addressed, including voluntary exclusion programs, harm-reduction initiatives, twelve-step groups, and other emerging resources for clients and families. This course is a core requirement of the SWA Problem Gambling Certificate and meets the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board’s 30-hour education standard for the Gambling Disorder Endorsement, supporting students in the SWA degree pathway toward LCDC II eligibility or higher.
