This course examines the history of African Americans from the end of Reconstruction to the present, focusing on the social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped Black life and identity in the United States. Structured both chronologically and thematically, the class explores the period of Jim Crow segregation; the Great Migration and the shaping of Black urban culture; the impact of World Wars I and II on civil rights; the emergence of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements; and more recent efforts toward racial and economic justice. Topics include the Harlem Renaissance, African American contributions to cultural and political life, and the evolving struggle for equality through the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The course will also consider contemporary movements such as #BlackLivesMatter, examining the legacies of African American resilience, activism, and influence on American society.
