ENG2100 Modern American Literature

This course examines the evolution of American literature from the mid-19th century to the present, focusing on how writers have responded to and shaped cultural, political, and social change. Students will explore major literary movements—including realism, naturalism, modernism, and contemporary trends—through a diverse selection of fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction. Key authors may include Mark Twain, Kate Chopin, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and voices from the Harlem and Southern Renaissances, as well as contemporary voices such as Toni Morrison and Leslie Marmon Silko. The course emphasizes critical reading, analytical writing, and thoughtful discussion of how literature reflects and challenges the American experience.
